Let's have some Doctor Who, shall we? Good, I'm glad we're agreed ; )

Things with whose perfection I am entirely incapable of putting up right now (vid edition):

Moves Like Jagger (Eleven/everyone) by [livejournal.com profile] lady_with_cats So, I have this song on my iPod at the moment, and I keep cracking up at inopportune times because . . . well, you'll see. Because the Doctor knows he is a smooth gq fucking rockstar, and he might even be right.

Safe to Shore (Amy, Eleven) by [personal profile] niyalune This vid almost makes me feel like we are back in season five again, just enjoying the joys and sorrows and adventures of Amy and her Raggedy Doctor, all while connecting it to season six and its complexities, and oh I love it so. The essence of these two together.

I Would Hurt a Fly (Eleven, his relationships, and his journey) by [personal profile] gnattery I won't mince words: this vid is the reason for this post. Because somebody made an epic, meat-y, meta-y vid about the relationship between the Doctor/the TARDIS/the Time Lords/the Master/the Universe/the Doctor's own darkness/Amy/Rory/River/and everything else. Oh, and it's beautiful. That's all.

(I know I owe comments on my last post--please forgive me. But I loved your insights and I will get back to it. Also: have watched Avatar: Legend of Korra and suspect it might be amazing, if flawed.)

And just like that, apparently, I'm thinking about Doctor Who again . . .

Warning: complete and total ramble below. Unforgivably unedited. Sloppily-defined literary terminology. Off the top of my head. But either I give you my thoughts like this, or you're not getting them at all, so. This has been your disclaimer.

Been thinking a bit more about why the case of Amy this season is so troublesome:

Ten points if you can follow this . . . )
promethia_tenk: (pond family)
Hi guys *waves* Is anybody still around? I'll apologize here for my general Not Being Here for the last I've Lost Track of How Long. You'll have to excuse me because Life and also Things Far Too Boring to Talk About and, yes, you may feel free to hate me for abandoning you /guilt

But the internet is for dissecting television in obsessive detail, so on to the Doctor Who:

I've had another thought that I'd like to contribute to the ongoing efforts to fanwank season six into some sort of emotional continuity for the Pond family. This time it's about Amy and what I think has become the accepted wisdom about her behavior in the second half of the season (?): that she was repressing her feelings about what had happened with Melody because that is Amy and how she deals with adversity. This is the girl who had never told her fiance she loved him, after all.

Not buying it )
promethia_tenk: (shirley that's nice)
It's that icon meme where people pick out some of your icons and you say why you have them. Rules:

1. Reply to this post, and I will pick five of your icons.
2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.
3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon glee.

Icons chosen for me under the cut )

If you're curious about any of my other icons, feel free to ask in the comments, and let me know if you want me to pick out some of yours for commentary : )

Hello, flist! Long time, no see. In answer to your questions: yes, I have been avoiding you. Have also been avoiding Doctor Who and watching Fringe at a frankly unhealthy rate (Mini rxn: Fringe! <3 <3 <3). I have lots of lovely posts queued up for reading, though, and shall be trying to catch up with you all as soon as possible.

I'm back, though, because I have finally had a eureka moment on a question that's been eating at me ever since Let's Kill Hitler: What the frak did they do to Melody? And I know I'm not the only one who had a hard time seeing any River in Mels or who was dissatisfied with Moffat slapping a "psychopath" label on her and counting that as explanation enough. So here's my theory:

My theory, which is my own . . . )

promethia_tenk: (kiss kiss bang bang)
Just to remind myself, because it bears reminding, and because I do manage to forget it: Moffat doesn't write good and evil.  Sure, he plays with the vocabulary sometimes (generally to deconstruct and undermine it), but that's never what it's about.  The real struggle, the real dynamic, the real juxtaposition on which everything hinges is CHAOS and ORDER.  Those are the forces we're dealing with.

I've worked out the thing about LKH that's been bothering me and that I was trying to get at in my fic:

Spoiiiiiilllers . . . )
promethia_tenk: (Default)
So, Hurricane Irene proved mercifully short, but that doesn't mean I wasn't left stranded for almost 24 hours with no power, no internet, and trying to decide what I think of Let's Kill Hitler all by my lonesome. What's a fangirl to do? Well, besides bring River and Fry!Master together to do drinks and talk shop in the Meta.

Title: A Psychopath Walks into a Bar
Fandom: Doctor Who, River, the Master
Length: 1,000 words
Rating: PG
Spoilers: 6x08
Summary: Meta fic. River and Fry!Master talk shop after Let's Kill Hitler.
AN: This will seem a tad less bizarre if you've read Evilness vs. The Doctor first, but the essentials are this: Meta is a blank, white space that exists outside of the narrative, where characters can come to talk about their storylines. After The End of Time, the Master regenerated into Stephen Fry and decided to retire to the Meta because he was tired of playing narrative pawn to the Doctor's ideas of evil. He and River get on well.

Stop me if you've heard this one . . . )

This is one of those fics you finish and realize you've been waiting around for:

The Moon Rises Over and Over Again by [livejournal.com profile] quidly (Doctor/River, Amy/Rory, the TARDIS, 11500 words, R)

A 'this is why I read fic" fic. A "this is why I watch this show" fic. An "oops, didn't realize I'd stopped breathing there for a moment but I don't really care" fic. It's about . . . people being bigger on the inside. And how those spaces relate.

Give yourself a good hour to read, but please, read!

1) Vid rec: Land's End by [livejournal.com profile] cherryice (River Song, awake in the waiting sea.) OMG, guys, go watch this now. It's . . . a River vid. I mean about River, about her life (and all the rest of their lives, too--I think especially Amy). Anyone struggling with the AGMGTW reveal, I think this might . . . actually . . . help? In a cathartic sense, cause it's not really a pretty picture. At any rate, it's amazing. Go watch many, many times!

2) Question: I've been meaning to ask for awhile, but it seemed very a propos to the vid above ('let the walls cave in'): if I were to write something up comparing River to Echo from Dollhouse, would that be of any interest to anyone but me? It would basically be about both women and their boxes (Echo and the Dollhouse/ River and the TARDIS, the astronaut suit, Stormcage, the Library computer, etc. . . .) and the complicated, push-pull, quasi-symbiotic relationships they have to them. Or is bringing up Dollhouse enough to put everybody off from the get-go?

3) Observation: Watched "The Pandorica Opens" last night for the first time since AGMGTW, and it struck me that . . . )

promethia_tenk: (fairytale)
I've made no secret around these parts of the fact that "A Good Man Goes to War" has left me in a right funk. And I know I'm not the only one! If you're anything like me, though, perhaps you are tired of your funk. Maybe you would like to have your show back and to just be excited about it again. Remember how this felt?:

tardis float

No, me either, really. But I want to. So I've made a big ol' rec list of Doctor Who stuff what has made me happy of late, and I share it with you now in the hopes that one or more of us may again be squeeful in advance of the rest of the season!

Some days are special . . . )

promethia_tenk: (river amy)
Hey, look at me trying to write things \o/ I still have no idea of what to do with AGMGTW, really, but as I finally found myself getting excited for the show again with the prospect of MOAR AMY + RIVER GOODNESS, I figured as good a place to start as any would be to stick them in a room and see what happens. Really very thoroughly unpolished, all dialogue, not sure if I even like and/or agree with all of this, and I wasn't terribly comfortable writing Amy even before Moffat decided to change everything we knew, so . . . /nervous rambling

Anyway, I think transparency in the writing process is a good thing, so here's me practicing what I preach!

Spoiler/Spec Warning: Spoilers through AGMGTW. Some speculation based on a close study of some shots from the trailer for the second half of the season, developed from a conversation that I don't think contained any specific spoilers about what was going on, but you know how these things go in fandom . . .

promethia_tenk: (river amy)
From Comic-Con, Karen Gillan talks to Alan Sepinwall about how interesting and important the relationship between Amy and River will be going forward:

Obviously this requires icons and MUCH FLAILING, omg I want them to have ALL THE GREAT SCENES.  ALL OF THEM.  WHY IS IT NOT DOCTOR WHO AGAIN YET???????????

(From here.)

promethia_tenk: (bigger on the inside)
I really, really didn't like the big reveal in the last episode at first, but I'm gradually coming around by realizing it's a lot more complex and interesting than it seems on the surface.  Then I realized this:

Spoilers for all episodes . . . )

promethia_tenk: (happy endings)
Head has been entirely too full of theories and spec lately (anybody else really looking forward to the hiatus?), so here's a few strands of possibly related, possibly unrelated theories that I've had floating around and needed to write down so as to get them out and see how crazy they sound.  All of the "things are never quite what they seem" variety.

Spoilers for all aired episodes.

Lots of stuff under the cut . . . )
promethia_tenk: (storytellers)
Spoilers for Doctor Who 6x01 and 6x02.  Although having seen though 6x04 would probably be safer.  Please no future spoilers in the comments.

So, I've been doing some Moffat-specific story analysis here (symbols, running themes, comparison to other Moff stories) and I am seriously starting to think that cut for HERETICAL THOUGHTS . . . )
promethia_tenk: (Default)
So, awhile back [livejournal.com profile] cinderbella333  asked me for some vid recs . . .

And awhile back before that [livejournal.com profile] elisi  taught me all about RTD-Who and Torchwood, and good luck getting her to express anything without throwing in a vid or two or twenty ; )

And back even before that, I asked a fairly facetious question because I felt like making fun of the Tenth Doctor (like you do) and ended up getting a lot more than I'd bargained for (and if that's not an argument for always asking the facetious question, I don't know what is).

So here is this thing that I have put together.  Of vids.  Lot of vids of Torchwood and of NuWho that I have watched and with some words about why I like them.  You might think of this as A Thing I Have Put Together for Cinderbella (and anyone else who might like to watch some vids, and also for myself since I quite wanted a list of my own for reference).  Or you might think of this as Vids and What I Have Learned About Them, in the manner of some end-of-the-semester project for Fandom104: Introduction to Audiovisual Modes of Critique and Expression.  Or you might think of this as Things I Think and Feel about the Whoniverse because, while this is a very long list, I make absolutely no claims to either comprehensiveness or objectivity.  This is simply a list of vids that happened to grab me and that I watched a lot because they seemed important to me in my own little corner over here.

I have tried to be very organized with different sections and descriptions so that anyone looking for something specific might find it.  And if you happen to know a real LJ or Dreamwidth link for anything I only have a YouTube link for, do please share.  Obviously this has been a very long time in the making, both in collecting materials and in the choosing and typing up and organizing, so here's hoping somebody besides myself will find it of some use.

And there's a My Little Pony vid at the bottom, if you make it that far . . . )

Title: In Which Rory is the Next David Attenborough
Fandom: Doctor Who, Rory/Amy, Eleven/River
Length: 350 words
Rating: PG
Spoilers: 6x01 and 6x02
Summary: Rory and Amy make fun of the Doctor's flirting technique.  Fluff ensues. (dialogue fic)
AN: I don't even know, guys: the comparison suddenly hit me and demanded to be written.  Also the Ponds have been adorable this season and I wanted to try my hand at writing them some more.  And Rory's deadpan humor is one of the best things ever.  And Eleven's flirting is adorable.  And picking apart his body language is fun.  And River being happy is adorable.  And a part of me really loves the atmosphere of secrets and paranoia and spying on each other that's going on and figures there must be fluffier sorts of spying happening too.  And another part of me will die if I go for more than half a day without mocking something.  Thus: thrown-together fic!

So, we're like a wildlife documentary, yeah? )
promethia_tenk: (ariadne investigation)
ETA: Please be mindful of spoilers in the comments.

Rather O_o sort of speculation that entered my head and demanded to be shared right now . . .

So, on reflection, my favorite thing about the Space & Time episodes for Comic Relief is the way, right at the end, that the Doctor knows his future self is going to come through the door with the information he needs to resolve the loop. This is a step up in sophistication from the time loops we've seen before--like in Time Crash or the loop that gets the Doctor out of the Pandorica--where a character essentially stumbles into a time loop and has to have it explained to them so that they can carry the rest of it out. Mechanically it works out exactly the same: a piece of information that appears seemingly out of nowhere is passed back and forth in a stable loop. But the attitude, somehow, matters immensely. It's almost like the Doctor has willed the information he needs into existence--he's not a pawn going through a loop set out for him, he's creating the loop and causing it to happen.

So the question becomes, how far could you push something like that? This is where it gets complicated . . . )

According to [livejournal.com profile] kaffyr , it is National Poetry Month!  I think poetry is my favorite sort of literature sometimes.  It's as if a mood mated with a puzzle and then they had a strange incantation-child that can take almost any form it wishes and yet is beguilingly solid.  I'll admit I like the difficult stuff that you can rip through in layers and layers and layers and need to look at from twelve different angles, but that does take quite a lot of time and concentration.  Below the cut then, two relatively brief and straight-forward poems.  Both real favorites of mine.  Both have been haunting me a bit of late because of certain thematic resonances I'm seeing with Doctor Who . . .

The burnt-out ends of smoky days . . . )
