It's that icon meme where people pick out some of your icons and you say why you have them. Rules:

1. Reply to this post, and I will pick five of your icons.
2. Make a post (including the meme info) and talk about the icons I chose.
3. Other people can then comment to you and make their own posts.
4. This will create a never-ending cycle of icon glee.

[personal profile] owlboy picked out these for me:

araedne By [livejournal.com profile] parttimelurker

Ariadne from the movie Inception. I first saw Inception about a week after season five of Doctor Who finished and the parallels (both thematic and in clever, mind-twisty-ness) floored me right from the beginning. This icon thus comes in handy for talking about both works, as well as symbolic ideas like mirroring, through the looking glass, labyrinths and mazes, etc. I especially like that, moments after the shot here, when Ariadne touches the mirror, it shatters and Mol charges out of the crowd behind it and attacks her, thus setting up the two women as poles in a duality (between mind and heart, among other things). (Side note: the movie is even better if you think of them, symbolically, as the same character.)

It also tickles me that Ariadne is an architecture student, which I was too, once : )

storytellers By [livejournal.com profile] kathyh

I stole this one from [livejournal.com profile] elisi and then proceeded to think of it as "ours." She asked kathyh to make it long ago when she noticed the mirroring between the two bedtime story scenes from Forests of the Dead and The Big Bang, and it is basically the perfect icon for anything ever: it's a shippy icon and a Library icon and it embodies the magic of this era of Who and a whole host of meta-y ideas about how storytelling functions on this show and also I love the circularity of it, which is entirely appropriate to this show, and I use it to talk about the writers of the show and other writers and how stories work in general and what we want out of stories and just talking about it is reminding me of everything that I love about this show and also it is yellow. *g*

lost in translation by [livejournal.com profile] sealedcards

A new acquisition! Scarlett Johanson's character from Lost in Translation, one of my favorite movies of all time. A very self-indulgent movie for me: I watch it when I'm feeling drifting, angst-y, twenty-something angst, usually round about three in the morning, and me and ScarJo sit up and are conflicted and have insomnia together. This icon has so much of that quiet, contemplative, melancholy atmosphere that I love from the movie.

mary by [livejournal.com profile] we_use_cheats

Another new one, picked up after watching Downton Abbey. Mary Crawley is fantastically written and she says things like (paraphrasing) "I don't feel as sad as I ought to, and that's what makes me sad," which I think I've been waiting to hear a character say my whole life. Whether or not this one stays around will depend heavily on how long I find myself still talking about DA, but for the time being, I had to have an icon. I wanted a shot of her looking characteristically prim.

spoiler alert by [livejournal.com profile] yeahsoanyway

This icon makes me giggle. The pic is from Doctor Who, the quote is from How I Met Your Mother, and the combination is quite clever. (See: because Rory is kinda a robot in that scene, and he's in love, and Barney is funny when he says things like giving away hints about his absurdist play.) I'm not really in HIMYM fandom anymore, but I like having the little reminder around, and of course, it's an iconic scene for Rory. Serves triple-duty for talking about spoilers!

If you're curious about any of my other icons, feel free to ask in the comments, and let me know if you want me to pick out some of yours for commentary : )
