Once Upon a Time

Hi all. Long time, and all that . . .
For anyone following the weather, got through Hurricane Sandy fine here, with shockingly little inconvenience at all, so yay for that. Hope you all are alright as well.
Also have vacation this week \o/ However, as my vacation destination (New York) ended up under water and am fighting a cold that won't die, week off has morphed into week for staying inside out of the rain, nursing my congestion, and catching up on tv and internets. So if you finally get a reply to a comment you made three months ago . . . that's what's going on.
Have managed to watch Once Upon a Time, and as I am currently awake at 3am, waiting for my decongestants to kick in so I can breathe again, shall say that I quite like it, even if I suspect I shall not be fannish about it. That is unless they decide to kick it up several gears, which in fairness I almost imagine they could. Am mulling over thoughts about how Moff-era Who, Fringe, and OUAT are all actually the same show, in different packaging. For the time being, though, am mostly like this:
I
just have
a lot
of
feelings
about Jiminy Cricket, ok?
Not all of them PG.
shut up

Date: 1 Nov 2012 07:38 am (UTC)Here, have the best icon I could find. Out of about two. But then you can't blame the icon makers for having better things to do when most of the male leads wear a lot of eyeliner and the show's protagonist has Disney hair.

Date: 1 Nov 2012 08:33 pm (UTC)And I did 5 exams this morning, and passed them all (Principles of Business Administration) - very dull, but useful.

it struck me that it's all about female characters. I mean, yes all the main characters are female, but the origin story is completely based around women.
It's maybe the only show I can think of in which being female is the default. Which is kinda amazing when you consider how often we are expected to think of maleness as default.

Date: 2 Nov 2012 06:43 pm (UTC)Sadly, he is truly a bit character on a show with a MONSTER ensemble cast (though it kinda looks like he might be getting set up for a larger part this year? Maybe? *crosses fingers*). But you can totally just watch his backstory episode as a stand-alone (1x05, That Still Small Voice, and by Jane Espensen!!, writer of all good things) and get all the important stuff.

I am not sure if that's a reason to watch or a reason NOT to watch Fringe or OUAT for me, haha. I mean, I have heard good things about both and thought vaguely about trying them out. But, much as I adore Doctor Who, it is a glorious mess of a show, and it is very emotionally draining, and I don't think I could handle more than one of it. :P

Date: 2 Nov 2012 11:36 pm (UTC)I find Fringe and OUAT both to be really good supplements to Moff Who? Especially for coping with unresolved Pond Family feelings. Because they both cover the same kind of themes and territory as DW but, since they're both American shows, they have so much more time to do it in. You'll be watching some scene from one of them and they'll be unpacking something that you really, really wanted Moff to get into but he only ever alluded to it.
Right now OUAT is doing all kinds of fabulous 'you're my long-lost daughter/parents and I desperately want to be with you but I don't know how to deal with the things that we're never going to get back . . .' stuff. At any rate, watching Fringe and OUAT is kind of my DW therapy. Your mileage may vary.
Also they're both very good shows in their own right!

made me wibble. Which would itself be enough to make me want to check out the show if I didn't have the TV attention span of a peanut. :P

Date: 3 Nov 2012 12:39 am (UTC)Hurts so good. And for the time being at least, it's less of an investment than Fringe. If you ever buy yourself some attention span : )

Date: 3 Nov 2012 07:07 pm (UTC)"I can stream the whole thing on Netflix" was exactly how I ended up here *g* I hear you about too many things going on, though. It's weird how that's always the way and then suddenly something that'd just been hanging around as a possibility goes and snags you by the ankle and then it's all over . . .
Yeah, you should, like, do grad school, though. That would probably be a good idea.

Date: 3 Nov 2012 02:57 pm (UTC)While it's been kinda fun, fun enough for me to follow, I don't get the feels from OUAT. It's gotten more ambitious in its second season, I'll grant it that.

Date: 3 Nov 2012 07:13 pm (UTC)OUAT is kinda reminding me of a Whedon show? In that it's the first season and everybody still feels like some cardboard stereotype, so it's kinda frustrating and boring to watch them. But I can see where they're starting to become more like actual characters and at least on this show there are textual reasons for why they are all cardboard stereotypes, so my meta-head is satisfied at least. But I would really like it if they could get on with the being real characters already so I can feel more invested in it.

Date: 6 Jan 2013 01:57 pm (UTC)What the heck did we do before Netflix? It feels like the dark ages . . .
I take it from your journal icon that you've gotten past the specials and on into Moff-Era? What do you think so far?

Date: 6 Jan 2013 03:48 pm (UTC)Also, I like Doctor 11, but Doctor 10 will always be my doctor, I think.
