Sadly, he is truly a bit character on a show with a MONSTER ensemble cast (though it kinda looks like he might be getting set up for a larger part this year? Maybe? *crosses fingers*). But you can totally just watch his backstory episode as a stand-alone (1x05, That Still Small Voice, and by Jane Espensen!!, writer of all good things) and get all the important stuff.
