ATTENTION INTERNETS.
Having just come home from a production of The Grand Duke, I have now officially seen every Gilbert and Sullivan operetta. All fourteen.
I respect that you may not all understand the majesty of this achievement, but suffice to say it has been 25 years in the making and, more importantly, my sister can now no longer hold it over me that she's seen them all and I haven't.
Hot damn, Julia is just better than any other G&S heroine by miles. Miles and miles. How did that happen? And why is she in the one that nobody ever puts on?
CAKE FOR ALL ON THIS GLORIOUS DAY.

Date: 30 Apr 2017 04:33 am (UTC)The victory was somewhat tainted by the sister and I driving home, debating what the best G&S trio song is, and both failing miserably for a whole half hour to remember that the trio song in the Mikado is 'Here's a How De-Do.' I was like 'just drive into the next tree, we will never overcome this humiliation . . .'

In college I took a course on G&S from the son of a former British Prime Minister, who liked to wear neon colored socks. At one point we had a trivia competition with a professional Gilbert and Sullivan musical troop. I was one of the people selected, because for some reason at that time I could remember all the trivia related to G&S. (Now this was in 1987 or 1988, so I can't remember most of it now.)
We saw every production ever done in that class -- but alas on VHS. And I think I've seen two done on stage but in high school productions. Would be interesting to see an actual professional production. Not sure seeing them done on television works as well, something is most likely lost in the transition.
