Thank you for that. After the first couple years of hell, I basically intuited that that was what was going on, but some of those details are far more insidious than I had imagined.
I've always prepared my own taxes. Well, for a year or two I mooched off my mom's copy of Turbo Tax, but I don't think I found it particularly less confusing, TBH. I just want to understand what I'm doing and why! It started out as a self-sufficiency thing: I want to at least know I can do my own taxes, even if I don't. But the longer I think about it the more it feels like IF I PAY SOMEBODY TO GET MY TAXES DONE THEN EVIL WINS.
Oh, I'm laughing through the pain--it's the only recourse.
No money back and owing money is what my First Born has been fighting for the past umpty-ump years. Ugh. That sucks. I've thankfully not had to worry on that account, though I rarely get refunds. The sheer agony of paperwork is more than enough without having to pile financial stress on top of it, I can hardly imagine!
