Fandom Snowflake Day 6

Doing this thing out of order. Because I feel like it.
Day 6
In your own space, pimp three comms or challenges and explain why you love them. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.
I'll admit I'm not so much into comms anymore. Probably means I'm old or something. BUT they do give you nice things to read, and maybe if you're finally pissed off enough at LiveJournal that you want to try to make a proper go of it over here, you're looking at your scraggly, sad, sparse reading list in despair. FEAR NOT! After a certain amount of careful cultivation my reading list is lustrous and full and YOURS CAN BE TOO! Learn how:
1) I think the best comm on Dreamwidth is the "network" button (friends of friends). Unlike on LJ, anyone can use this feature. It should be over in your sidebar or header somewhere. Shamelessly snoop through your friends' reading lists and find excellent people who are posting cool things. And every time you friend someone new, your network button gets better. Very neat.
2)
getting_started and
lj_refugees are good for advice and tips about Dreamwidth.
lj_refugees is good for if you like watching the carnage every time LJ goes belly up. *munches popcorn*
3) Did you know
fandomsecrets is on Dreamwidth now?
fandomsecrets is on Dreamwidth now. Like, this is the proper comm over here and the LJ comm is a bunch of links pointing this way. I don't read them very often, but fun.
4) Consider indulging in interests outside fandom.
ebooks for instance. I can be well-rounded! I don't just watch tv all the time! *pets e-reader*
ladybusiness is also good for feeling like you don't just watch tv all the time and have wide-ranging interests.
5) On LJ I find it difficult to follow any comms outside of my main, obsessive fandom because they will take over everything. Here I can follow the main comm for every damn show I like and get sudden, surprise treats that pop up on my reading list at unexpected times and remind me of how much I love ______ show. Example:
white_lotus is a lovely (and fairly active) Avatar: The Last Airbender/Legend of Korra comm, which is not a fandom I'd ever think to follow on LJ, but rather like having a taste of now and again.
6) For people who like pretty, shiny things: Cure boxiness with
dreamwidthlayouts, for proper DW layouts designed to work with the site. Do not let the words "CSS" scare you: not difficult to use! Most come with dead simple instructions. Icon snob?:
big_blue_bin,
colorvary,
forsquares,
gosh,
casett
7) This sounds silly, but as soon as I moved
who_daily over here through the magical power of RSS feeds, this felt like my legit flist/reading list and LJ felt like my backup. Sadly, not all LJ content is well-suited for this treatment, but if you've got a comm or journal that consists primarily of unlocked posts and doesn't have a lot of long entries and cut tags, you're golden (feeds can't see locked posts, and cuts will disappear, showing you the full, long entry on your reading page). Make yourself feeds here (available for everyone, not just paid users). Suggested:
who_daily_feed,
vidding_feed,
dwicons_feed, etc.
8) Last but not least,
dw_news is actually good reading, not just boilerplate and administrivia. Like, here is a seriously interesting impromptu lecture/discussion about social media theory and website design that sheds real light on why LJ is making the sorts of site changes that it is and why these changes are not necessarily stupid. No, really, read it cause it's really cool.
I need to learn to be less wordy . . .
