Srs philosophical question . . .

Why is it all fanvids are adoring? I mean, let's face it, there are basically three varieties of fanvid: shmoop, awesomeness, and emo. [/generalization]
Where's the critique? Where's the snark? Where are the vids that take the hero down a peg or two, or at least slap him about the head a bit? Where's the mockery? Where, in other words, is the vid about the Tenth Doctor set to this song:
Little Jackie, "The World Should Revolve Around Me" (Sorry, embedding disabled)
I mean, look at some of this:
Ain't nothin' gonna get between me and my flow,
Ain't nothin' gonna come between me and my afro . . .
I've had a lot of failed relationships
I don't get involved 'cause I'm not equipped
I believe that the world should revolve around me
I don't see the point of a partnership
It won't be long until I start to trip
Yes sir-ee, the whole world should revolve around me.
There's only one me in the galaxy:
I am an endangered species
This kind of flower don't grow on Earth
Just lettin' ya know, for what it's worth
This kind of knowledge can cause a depression,
So I bide my time with philosophical questions:
Not for nothin', but what came first?
The chicken nugget or the Egg McMuffin?
Tee hee. And it goes on, in deliciously bouncy, trenchant fashion.
VIVE LA SATIRE!
Or am I just an evil person?

Date: 27 Oct 2010 08:35 pm (UTC)I'm new to Who fandom this season. Unless you've pointed them out to me, I've probably missed most of the classics of the RTD era. I'm gonna have to give that a few rewatches. It's obviously quite rich, and I can tell I'm not getting half of it yet.
(You've seen CoE, haven't you? Otherwise this one won't make much sense.) Also pretty harsh I'm afraid.
I haven't. I know the basics, mostly; it's been hard to avoid picking up plot points and reactions. So, I got a little out of that, but yeah . . .
There is Anything the Doctor Can Do..... (Doctor Vs. the Master), mostly silly.
<3333333 The silly, it pleases me. A new favorite.
What We Had. Martha, Mickey & Jack. V. harsh, but gorgeous.
Oh . . . .
I did not know I needed that until I saw it. Amazing. Oh, Martha. *huggles*
I think the Doctor has a tendency to reward dramatics. Any character who will take it on the chin and keep going sooner or later is going to get taken for granted.
There does seem to be a lack of satirical vids.
I knew there was a gap here. I remember reading something once about fan culture and about how (at least under US copyright) typically "male" expressions of fan culture are usually protected under fair use because they tend to be satirical (like the many, many Star Wars parodies), while more "female" fan culture (like shippy vids) is seen simply as infringement without any sort of critical eye behind it and thus gets subject to threats and takedown notices.
Thanks so much for all the recs!

Once you've seen Torchwood it's going to blow you away! :)

I'd forgotten just how awesome that one is, to be honest. The editing is just out of this world - the way she makes Jack, Martha and Mickey all turn to each other is genius. Plus I love how she conflates the Doctor's love for, and loss of, Rose and the Master. (The bit where he talks to Harriet Jones, interspersed with Saxon posters etc is incredible. As if he engineers his evil ex's takeover... ETA: Plus Ten and Rose frolicking about on New Earth, whilst Jack gets left behind to die and die. Ouch ouch ouch. So harsh, and yet not untrue.) Also I love that on the show, at the end of JE, those three walked away together.

Hmmm. Yes I can see that. :(
Anyway, a few more recs. I'll be back with more, but these are just extra brilliant.
Shut Up And Driver is THE Martha vid. 'Cause she's awesome.
Also I feel obliged to tell you to watch

The whole thing with Harriet Jones is just one of those 'you have got to be kidding me' things for me. I don't often feel the urge to strangle fictional characters . . .
Also I love that on the show, at the end of JE, those three walked away together.
By the end of JE, I think I was so delirious, I've completely forgotten that that happened. That makes me happy to know, at least. I really do need to get around to watching Torchwood.

<333333 Oh, Martha. Donna might have been more fun to watch, but basically . . . fuck yeah, Martha Jones. The scene where she finally leaves was the punch the air moment of the whole four seasons for me.
[info]humansrsuperior is a vidding goddess, and EVERYTHING she has made is worth watching. Her vid tag is here. I will however point you towards Blackout. It's a Doctor/Rose vid, but how ('don't fool yourself, this love's too good to last'). Really, just watch it. Trust me.
Mmmmm . . . yes, you are very right. Also, her vid about Sherlock's coat always makes me massively happy.
Also I feel obliged to tell you to watch [info]hollywoodgrrl's Signed, the Doctor, which is very experimental and quite harrowing, really. But, a perfect example of what vids can achieve.
Nothing will convince me that this is not cannon.
Thanks for the recs! Oh, and I got to the library and picked up a few Peter Wimsey novels. I've only just started, but they do seem utterly charming. Wimsey sort of immediately took on the persona of Eleven in my brain, which is a not unpleasant sort of confusion to have going on.

In a way I like that his greatest flaw (which led to his ultimate downfall) showed up so early, but it still doesn't make it OK...

Yes, yes you do. And you'll get to experience something develop from not-very good, through OK-but-still-crack, to zomg-masterpiece. I know RTD doesn't do much for you, but when he really tries, he's superb!
Mmmmm . . . yes, you are very right.
Interestingly, she's a HUGE Doctor/Rose shipper, which means that she's not coming from a place of derision, but a place of love. And even so is able to step back and assess all the problems. I love that.

Vids about coats are automatically awesome!

Extraordinary, isn't it? I don't want it to be canon, because I like my happily-ever-afters, but oh, it's painfully plausible.

\o/ I am so very happy! Although Peter Wimsey is blond and posh and is very good at charming the ladies when he wants to. But yes - there is a certain quintessential Englishness to both of them that's unmistakable.

It makes aallll the difference. With any ship, I think.

I like them too, but that one just did not feel earned. At all. It's like the whole thing was founded on delusion.

Something in the speech patterns just begs the comparison.

Date: 30 Oct 2010 09:35 pm (UTC)Torchwood - on the whole - doesn't get the get-out-of-jail cards that DW does. People die. A lot.

*nods* I tend to like my ships all messed up anyway, so... :)

See I rather love it. Because of the way it's so openended and unclear. He's the Doctor, and yet not quite (one life, no TARDIS), and they've both been abandoned. It could go in any direction, and I find that fascinating. (Which is why they should never ever go back and visit them in canon. I want every possibility to apply.
Something in the speech patterns just begs the comparison.
Hmmm, Yes. For he is an Englishman...
