I didn't know there was an earlier tv show! Wow, that is . . . super early 90s, no mistake.

I finished watching the new one and it is so pure. Highly recommend if you're in a spot where you just need some entertainment designed for ten year old girls.

I was a tomboy so, unsurprisingly, my favorite character was Kristy. I liked Stacey and Claudia a lot but I didn't identify with them at all as I was an unfashionable nerd.

I spent maybe 5% of my life at that age reading BSC books? It would've been higher but my mom called BSC & Sweet Valley & Saddle Club "brain candy" and limited me to one per book-buying trip.

Fun fact: my friend Cam and I wrote the first draft of the first book of a series called Computer Club which was explicitly modeled after Baby Sitters Club only instead of babysitting they did stuff with computers.

Never got into Kristy much though I didn't dislike any of them. Dawn was probably my second fave. Rather intrigued to see what I think of them all in my old age here, tbh, and if my preferences have shifted any.

My mom let me read whatever I wanted, but cared about the proportions. I could read any BSC book but only if I also read lots of other books. She was similar about video games - we had a Nintendo, and we could get any game we wanted, but we had to play through it before we could get another one. I think she just didn't want us to spend all of our time on videogames or these series-focused books.

I've started watching and it's pretty cute. They kept the title design from the books and it made me so happy, and the episodes are following the titles and stories of the early books, so now I'm trying to remember what comes next. (Though I think Mimi dies soon, and I'm not sure I'm ready for that . . .)

ETA: Oh! I think Kristy is probably one of the strongest actors. I'm enjoying how they're handling her.

LOL. I can't say I recognize all of those. My younger bother and sister were in to Animorphs, but that was slightly after my time. Oh and Goosebumps! I didn't read a lot of those, but it's the kind of thing that takes me back when I remember it's existence.

I think my single-mindedness somewhat bemused my mother, but she is at least an introvert as well and thus couldn't really see that it was doing any harm and let me be.

Once I was a lot older I realized there were many things about my childhood that could have been very, very difficult for me in a different household but which my parents just saw as normal and a matter of course, and I am thankful for that.

I think they hit a particular YA spot where characters just slightly older than you are the most fascinating thing in the world? And they're pretty wholesome books; it's all about friendships and such. Every book is from the perspective of a different club member and there's so many books, so you could basically live in them.

Things keep happening and it's like omg i remember that! Dawn just moved to town and became friends with Mary Anne and Dawn's mom and Mary Anne's dad used to date when they were in high school! It's very thrilling. However, I am distressed that Dawn and her mom seem to be living in a fairly normal house, not an old, haunted farmhouse, and then how is Dawn supposed to discover the secret underground railroad passage that goes out to the barn?!!?? Inquiring minds need to know.

Apparently what I had was called the My Little Pony Paradise Estate and this thing was insane and nothing that I would ever, ever have gotten in a million years if it wasn't slightly broken and being sold for $5 on somebody's driveway. I'm still a bit surprised I got it even so; I can't imagine my mom relished having all that crap around. But I'm looking at pictures of all the furniture and bits that came with it and I can remember all of it and which bits were broken and how it all smelled . . .

omg. That is AMAZING. I am not jealous as such, because I don't think it was sold in Denmark, but YE GODS I would have loved it. I made sure to spoil the girls wrt MLP. They got Celebration Castle (this is it all packed up - the mirror on the inside is the castle door/drawbridge). Actually looking at google images, they also got this one AND this one. Over the course of several years... We never bought them things 'just because' but tried to do our best to get them some good stuff for birthdays/Christmas.

I'm still a bit surprised I got it even so; I can't imagine my mom relished having all that crap around. But I'm looking at pictures of all the furniture and bits that came with it and I can remember all of it and which bits were broken and how it all smelled . .

Someone wrote a Lindsey Lohan Parent Trap reference in the middle of an episode and I have never felt so culturally catered to.

I finished the whole thing (it's half-hour episodes, so very bingeable in a short period) and it is so pure. For the first half it was like, well, this is nice and nostalgic for me and a very solid production but not really something I'd recommend to anyone who isn't a ten year old girl or was once a ten year old girl obsessed with this series. But it really hit its stride in the second half and by the end I was just totally in love with it all.

Not to say anybody needs to run out and watch it, but if you're ever in the mood for some television written for ten year old girls, it is fucking lovely.

I never read the books as a kid, but I started watching the show, and it is so much fun!

Kristy quite possibly got the biggest boost from the books for me, and yes, her actor was amazing. (Also how great was Alicia Silverstone? That helped too.) Sadly my book-favorite Claudia didn't pop as much for me here, though I can't tell you that they did anything wrong in particular. It might just be a matter of media and the introvert/extrovert divide? Introvert Claudia comes across better in a book where we have more access to her thoughts while extrovert Kristi reads better on screen.

But the show absolutely solidified my love of Dawn, who is my runner-up fav in the books. As soon as she showed up I felt like the show came to life.

Alas, I've always struggled with Stacy, and I don't think the show did anything to help there.

I did like the show's upgraded progressivism. The books were actually fairly progressive for their time: Claudia has always been Japanese, Jessi has always been black. Stacy has always had diabetes. All of the divorce and single-parent households and blended families were very much a feature of the books. And they tried to show a real variety of kids and families in the people they babysat, like there's a book about a kid who's deaf (admittedly all in a pretty well-off Connecticut suburb). So I think they've done a good job of translating that into modern day with more modern consciousness.

The show clearly takes place in Fairfield County, which is one of the wealthiest counties in the country. Connecticut has extreme disparities in income: some of the wealthiest towns and some of the poorest cities in the country. New Haven (where Yale is) has a poverty rate over 25%.

I ADORED the bit about Andy Goldsworthy - I'm a huge fan of his!
