Summary: “I suddenly recognized the flavor in my mouth: it's the taste of power.”
On Tumblr, On AO3
UPDATE:
elisi has written an utterly massive and brilliant commentary for this vid, which also devolves into a general meta about the show and a look at
purplefringe's gorgeous Hallelujah vid.
A/N: So, this vid would not exist at all without
owlboy. His ‘ecstatically queer,’ metaphor-heavy, and D/s-influenced reading of this show is, frankly, the best analysis of it I’ve seen anywhere. It’s everything I could feel was lurking underneath the surface of the story and couldn’t quite discover myself. It was Owls who pointed out the clear thematic congruence between Aziraphale’s journey to empowerment and wholeness and that of Hansel/Hedwig in Hedwig and the Angry Inch, and it was Owls who fucking hijacked my brain with NPH’s gloriously filthy performance of this song at the Tonys (if you’ve never seen it, treat yo self.) Anyway, what I’m saying is: I just made the vid.
If you’re unfamiliar with Hedwig, Hansel/Hedwig is from East Berlin. He meets an American GI (the sugar daddy in the song) and eventually agrees to get a sex change so that they can legally marry and he can move to America. (The sex change gets botched and the sugar daddy later leaves, but we'll overlook this part.) So then, if East and West Berlin are Heaven and Hell and the demon tempting you to turn against your people and your former identity in favor of life with him on earth is an American sugar daddy, it all, in fact, works rather well. (The rest of the movie involves Hedwig’s journey to reconcile her split identity.)
If you enjoy this vid, I strongly encourage you to read all of Owl’s fantastic meta:
Aziraphale is a big gay thot
Mirrors in Good Omens (ie: what are all these other characters doing in this vid?)
good omens d/s (Considerably more bawdy/tongue-in-cheek than the other two but also with, like, Shakespeare references. The post that birthed this vid.)
And two pieces that weren’t written by Owls, but also influenced this vid:
Why is Aziraphale so gay? (AO3 login required. ETA: it's also unlocked on DW.)
Making An Effort: Queer (Trans) Masculinity in the Ethereal & Occult Beings of Good Omens (Based on the book rather than the show, but still good.)
A million thanks to both
elisi and
owlboy for beta-ing and EXTREMELY IMPORTANT AND APPRECIATED flailing.
And last but not least, I do rather consider this vid a companion piece to my Crowley vid Read My Mind.
I've got a sweet tooth
For licorice drops and jelly roll
Hey, sugar daddy
Hansel needs some sugar in his bowl
I'll lay out fine China on the linen
And polish up the chrome
If you've got some sugar for me
Sugar daddy, bring it home
Blackstrap molasses
You're my orange blossom honey bear
(Sugar daddy, sugar daddy)
Bring me Versace blue jeans
Black designer underwear
(Sugar daddy, sugar daddy)
We'll dress up like the disco dancing
Jet set in Milan and Rome
If you've got some sugar for me
Sugar daddy, bring it home
Oh, the thrill of control
Like the rush of rock and roll
It’s the sweetest taste I've known, oh yeah
So come on, sugar daddy, bring it home
When honey bees go shopping
It's something to be seen
(Sugar daddy, lick your daddy)
They swarm to wild flowers
And get nectar for the queen
(Sugar daddy, lick your daddy)
And every gift you bring me
Gets me dripping like a honeycomb
If you've got some sugar for me
Sugar daddy, bring it home
Oh, the thrill of control
Like the Blitzkrieg on the roll
Is the sweetest taste I've known, oh yeah
So if you've got some sugar bring it home, (oh yeah)
Come on, sugar daddy, bring it home
Whiskey and French cigarettes
A motorbike with high-speed jets
A Waterpik, a Cuisinart
And a hypo-allergenic dog
Oh, I want all the luxuries of the modern age
Every item on every page
In the Lillian Vernon catalogue
[spoken]
Luther: Oh baby, somethin’ crossed my mind
I was thinking you’d look so fine
In a velvet dress
With heels and an ermine stole
[spoken]
Hansel: Oh, Luther darling, heaven knows
I’ve never put on women’s clothes
Except for once
My mother’s camisole!
So you think only a woman
Can truly love a man
Well you buy me the dress, I'll be more woman
Than a man like you can stand
I'll be your Venus on a chocolate clam shell
Rising on a sea of marshmallow foam
And if you got some sugar for me
Sugar daddy, bring it home
It's our tradition to control
Like Erich Honecker and Helmut Kohl
From the Ukraine to the Rhone, oh yeah
Sweet home uber alles,
Lord, I'm coming home
Come on, sugar daddy, bring me home

From:AND A HYPOALLERGENIC DOG!!!
Date: 21 Jul 2019 11:03 am (UTC)That quote/song immediately popped into my brain the first time I saw Aziraphale sucking down a grape in the theater and I could NOT get it out of my head or explain why but you made the video that does. FOR MEeee<3 GOSH<333
I think it stands well enough on it's own even without all the meta explanaitions, you took so much time and care and put so much thought into it. The imagery all aligns, it makes perfect sense. [and just to add, the ''energy'' I was talking about the live version having in comparison, I think the imagery adds that little punch? Never had to worry after all]
and it's hysterically funny but also it works precisely because this IS their dynamic and IT IS THAT DYNAMIC that helps them save the world and. I keep watching the bits with Madame Tracy / the airfield because YES! That's what I'm SAYING!!! ''I'll be more woman than a man like you can stand...'' and she takes the gun oh my god!!! Crowley stopping time on ''bring it home''!!! I am trying to be Thoughtful and Coherent here but I just fdgfgg!!! I keep rewatching that bit over and over. it's so good.
I am, indeed, an extatic queer. Thank you for making this and thank you both for collaborating. It means a lot that people get what I'm talking about and it evolved into this lovely crafted vid with a song from one of my favourite movies. <3
