Hmmmm, a good point. Though that did not stop fandom from telling me all about Ace, and yet all I knew about Leela was that she was a savage, deliberately positioned as eye candy for the dads, and had a bit of a Pygmalian plotline.
All of which is certainly true, but leaves out the crucial fact that ohmygodsheissoawesome.
I don't have any analytical thoughts about Leela, she's too important to
me. my media world was pretty barren of representation when i was a kiddo -
there was Princess Leia and that was approximately it. Leela was a
motherfucking action hero who routinely solved problems and rescued
herself. (i don't know what i would think of the Tom Baker era if i was
watching it for the first time now, but my local PBS station only had
seasons 12-15 when i was little, and they played an episode at 7pm every
weekday. when Leela decided to stay on Gallifrey, then it was time to start
back up with Sarah Jane and Harry.)
Princess Leia was a pretty major tentpole of my young media experience as well but, alas, no Leela. I don't know if I can summon much analysis of her myself, tbh. My brain is mostly stuck on omfgilovehersomuch.
I am very grateful that I have Romana to look forward to next or I was going to be bitterly unhappy about her going (also I've been warned about how she leaves and thus am prepared, hopefully.)
You've been telling me to watch Four; I don't recall anything about Leela.
Though you were right about Four (I'm up to The Invasion of Time). He kinda reminds me of Twelve, at least so far? About a season nine level of Twelve.

eta: also fun fact she was named after the first woman to hijack an airplane, which I think explains a lot
