River was about life and the power of grace and the flow of time. She was associated with water and forests and music, life and death and renewal. Her appearance told us the Doctor was going to grow and heal and and again be a force for life and wellbeing.
This thought makes me want to somehow draw River into the story of Knock Knock, where so many of these elements feature. But I can't see how she would fit. Indeed the parent/child/grandchild narrative and the friendship sub-theme almost explicitly excludes marital partners.
