I need to re-read The Waste Land NOW.
*pleased*

I thought of the comparison way back in season five, and it is a shockingly rich one. Also it helps that Moffat and Eliot are both magpie collectors of references, which makes it easier to just fuzz your eyes and let the two blend together. The other comparison I like is to The Tempest, which Eliot references in The Waste Land anyway.

But of course the Doctor is the Fisher King. Of course he is:

(I'll admit, things got pretty confusing in there for the last two seasons. It was like: THIS IS NOT THE STORY. FIX THIS SHIT, MOFFAT. There was even an episode with a monster named the Fisher King who was a Doctor mirror, AND IT WAS ALL WRONG TOO. But I can feel it all coming back together, and what was happening in the Twelve and Clara years is making more sense in retrospect . . .)

At the beginning of "Smile" when Nardole knocks and Bill says "Who's that?" the Doctor mutters, "Mum."
HA! So he does! Yes, I like that.

P.S.: Did you see that Moff has titled episode eleven 'World Enough and Time'? The minx.
