Well it starts kind of slow, but by about the 6th episode it's totally addictive and I ended up mainlining the entire series twice in a row. It's basically about two kids who set off on a mission to find the Philosopher's Stone because of reasons, and as they go along things just keep getting darker and weirder. The things you like about Avatar - world building and the balance of natural elements and complexity etc- are done well in FMA too, which is why I thought of it. And symbology and steampunk and philosophy!!!
Also: Riza Fucking Hawkeye, who is like Olivia Dunham in anime form.
