ETA: And not that I think that River isn't interesting in her own right (heh), but she was presented to us right from the very beginning both as character and as narrative device. She came in and was like "this is a story about how the Doctor grows up." For this big, central mystery about her not to play a major role in the Doctor's character development like that would be sloppy story telling.
