That's why I wrote it--it all fit, and I wanted other people to see those connections. I think ALL my fic is about connections...
Working out that River must be staying in prison by her own choice was a big ahhhhhh moment for me, and it's so entirely opposite of anything the Doctor would do. I have about ten different thoughts, and none of them is co-operating. However, it is a *very* good bit of insight - I think I had registered it, but not actually processed the why's, so thank you. :)
When I was watching "Exit Wounds" and Captain John asked him why he let himself be buried and he said "penance," my eyes bugged out a bit. Same word and everything. Also, both times Jack thinks he's going to die (the bomb on his ship, the Daleks killing him) he accepts it with the same kind of stoicism that River does. (Just one little BtVS quote: BUFFY: We're not all gonna make it. You know that./SPIKE: Yeah. Always knew I'd go down fightin'.) Plus of course there's the way they both get to 'live forever'. And oh, there is so much of Ten in Rose, here:
ROSE: How can I let go of this? I bring life... THE DOCTOR: But this is wrong! You can't control life and death! ROSE: But I can.
Very, very different, and yet their stories hit the same notes.
Actually, I think Moffat writes that kind of thing a lot, and I absolutely adore it--you can see it in the way Rory is present even when he's been erased from time too. Ooooh yes.
I keep coming back to the idea of space--he doesn't write emotions so much as create spaces for them to well up. He defines spaces between people. I once wrote an essay about Spike & Angel in S5 of AtS, partly because people complained a lot that neither character developed much at all. And I realised that all the development happened inbetween them. (I named it 'The Space Between', even.) I absolutely adore it when that happens, and - like I've said so often - it's something I've missed since the Buffyverse ended. I am beyond thrilled to have it back. :)
Which is, as I've said, what I love in this icon--I swear I can see the bubble around them. ♥
