Questioning without hope of answering. That was my first thought after finishing this fic. Everything is presented in shadow and half-reveals, an uncertain landscape. . . I think I realized by the time I'd finished this that it was mostly about anxiety . . .
Though I am a little surprised you didn't pursue River's marked arms. I think they'd make an interesting jumping off point for rituals/superstitions. Hmmm, you're right. There probably is something interesting to be written there. I think in my head, though, they really are a utilitarian tally system until proven otherwise, so I'll have to leave it to someone else.
